Be + Do = Have
Whether in life or in business, in order for a change to really be meaningful it often needs to be dramatic. Minor changes can be achieved fairly easily, but they will of course only result in minor differences. For example, if you want to increase your sales by 150% within one quarter, you’ll need to make significant changes both in how you think and how you act.
To have what you want in life, you need to first do something to get it. If you want wealth, then invest. If you want love, you must give it. If you want respect, earn it. Regardless of what it is, the formula is the same. You must do to have.
Doing, though, isn’t the only thing required in order to change and achieve the desired results. You need to figure out how to become the person you dream of being, developing the identity, values and beliefs of the type of person who has what you want from life. An unfortunate but accurate analogy of this is the lottery winner who squandered his millions, essentially because he didn’t think like a winner and a millionaire.
We all have an identity that we’ve developed, initially at a young age and throughout our life. It contains beliefs and values that can either inspire or limit us. In business, perhaps you believe your customers are only ever looking for something to come cheaply. Therefore, you might only attract that type of client, because of your belief. Or perhaps you assume that all business owners are greedy – that could lead you to becoming one yourself.
If you want to have something, say for example a million dollars, you need to develop the beliefs and values of a millionaire. Believe me, they do have a significant and distinct mentality, and it’s worth emulating. The fact of the matter is, you will earn plus or minus 10% of the earnings of the three people you associate with the most. How come? Because you develop the values and beliefs of the people you surround yourself with.
Let’s examine doing business a little further. If you want to have amazing customers, and amazing businesses need amazing customers, then you need to develop your business into one that will attract them. So, who is an amazing customer? They’re different for each business, but in some cases are ones who always pay cash, or send you lots of referrals, or settle their invoices right away. Identify who your ideal customer is, and learn how they shop. As a result, you can become a business that attracts them.
By default, an amazing business, from the customer’s perspective, is one that delivers more than they expect. It provides excellent service and makes them want to come back. Once you’re in business, it’s time to do the things that will make your business be known as an amazing one. For example, imagine you own a luxury vehicle and you want to take it to the garage for maintenance. Will you select the garage that looks like it never works on anything more than old economy cars? Or will you head to the garage that is well-maintained, with professional staff and other luxury cars already there? If you want the customers to come to you, you need to be the business that draws them in.
If you are the type of professional or company that attracts the ideal clientele, they will come. But you must never forget that in order to have, you must be and do!
